Help Make a Difference/ Save the Children and Nordic Naturals

logo-save-the-childrenDid you know that:

• Low-income children begin school as many as 18 months behind their more affluent peers.
• More than 60 percent of low-income families have no children’s books in their homes.
• Children living in poverty who can’t read on grade level by 3rd grade are 13 times less likely to graduate on time than their peers.

Do these statistics sadden you, as they do me? If so, then I have good news for you. Nordic Naturals, the leading manufacturer of omega-3 supplements for kids and adults, has provided a way for us to make a difference! Through their Back to School Essentials campaign, Nordic Naturals will donate $1 to the non-profit organization, Save the Children, for every bottle of Baby’s DHA, Children’s DHA™, Omega-3.6.9. Junior™, Ultimate Omega Junior®, or Nordic Berries™ purchased at a retail store from now until September 30, 2013. This money will go directly to Save the Children’s program to promote literacy.

Childhood literacy is a cause very dear to the heart of Keri Marshall, Chief Medical Officer at Nordic Naturals. She says, “Supporting learning in children has always been a passion for us at Nordic Naturals. Omega-3s have proven themselves as important building blocks not only for overall health in children but in supporting a child’s ability to learn. We are proud to be associated with Save the Children and to support their meaningful work to improve childhood literacy in this country.”

I, too, believe supporting childhood literacy is the best thing we can do to make a real difference in our country. Education is often the only way out of poverty. If young children don’t have access to books in their homes, they’re at an unfair disadvantage. It’s our job to share what we know about learning with those in need.

Save the Children has created a program to increase childhood literacy. By working in partnership with schools all across the United States, Save the Children has developed intensive after-school and summer classes aimed at increasing literacy. Data collected since 2011 shows that their efforts are working! Don’t you want to join this movement? All you have to do is buy something that will make you and your family healthier! How great is that? You’ll be helping others, while at the same time helping yourself.

So, go to the store today! And when you get home, read about Save the Children’s literacy program here.
